Back on June 23rd the featured post card was of the original Dater School building. The postcard below features a view from farther down the street “in color”, post the renovations of 1923.

The school accepted students from seven of the surrounding towns without their own high schools, and operated as a high school until 1937 when the current Ramsey High opened, at which time it became an elementary school. Today a new building at the same site serves as Ramsey’s Dater School.

  2. Paul Culin says:

I attended Dater school in 1967 & 1968. I may be mistaken, but I seem to recall that many locals referred to it as the “School Street” school.

I attended “School Street School” from kindergarten to the 4th grade. They had just completed the Mary Hubbard School on Wycoff Ave, and I was sent there for the second half of 4th grade and all of 5th. Then back to School Street for 6th, 7th and 8th. Many fond memories. Got the chance to tour the school 1 week before they tore it down. Exactly the way I remembered it!!! Do the girls in the class of “62” remember having to make their own graduation dresses?

My mother, who was Catharine Zapp at the time, taught 6th grade there in the 1920’s when it was still a high school. Her classroom was the “projection room” overlooking the auditorium. She later taught 1st grade there as Catharine Kielch before moving to Hubbard School when “School Street School” became a middle school prior to opening Smith School. I was a student there for kindergarten through eighth grade, then taught 7th grade American history there until 1968 when Smith School opened. In fact, I taught Paul Culin, who left a previous comment.

Mr. Wilding was the principal in the 1960’s. Prior to his tenure was Eric Smith who followed Wesley D. Tisdale.

In response to Susan’s comment Naomi Buscher, the home economics teacher, did a great job with helping you create lovely dresses.
